Heatsroke
Things you should know to prevent your animal from suffering in the heat. Heat stroke is a serious condition where the animal’s body temperature rises to a very high degree. Animals have a limited ability to sweat. If their body temperature reaches 106 degrees, brain damage or even sudden death can occur.
Causes of heat stroke:
- Left in cars
- Left outdoors without enough shade or water
- Inadequate water supply
- Exercised during the heat of the day
Signs and Symptoms:
- Rapid noisy panting
- Lethargy
- High body temperature
- Bright mucous membranes
- Vomiting/diarrhea
- Thick saliva
- Laying down, doesn’t want to get up
- Unconsciousness
What to do if your animal has heat stroke:
Transport to a veterinary hospital immediately. You can place cool water to the armpits, pads of feet and in the inner thighs.
Tips to avoid heatstroke:
Do not walk animals before 9pm at night or after 8am in the morning. On cloudy days be especially cautious. Just because the weather is ok for people, it is not always right for the animals. Last but not least, do not leave animals in the car.
